Jack Fowler was born in Ada and raised in eastern Oklahoma. He worked as a journalist, school teacher, cowboy, and musician before becoming a full-time artist in 2011, and since then, his work has been shown from Arizona to Uganda. Known for his colorful, pop-art style portraits and landscapes, Fowler has also created three, large murals in downtown Oklahoma City, including the controversial "Bricktown Okctopus," the first non-historical mural ever allowed in Bricktown. He is a freelance writer and cartoonist, and hosts "Tumbleweeds All the Way Down," a weekly, roots music radio show on 91.7 The Spy. His studio is in downtown Oklahoma City.
Artist statement
I don't know if it's the elevation, the air quality, or the relative proximity to God, but the light is different out west. It's clearer somehow, clean and blade-sharp, and when the sun starts to slip down behind the mesas, the light runs over the land like spilled paint and bathes the canyons and monuments in unimaginable colors. These new paintings are my attempt to not only capture those ephemeral sunbeams, but to capture what it feels like when a thunderstorm slowly boils across the prairie, or an elk bounds out of the aspens just after sunrise, or the evening's last light seeps out of the canyon. ______________________________________________________
