Literati Press: Abandoned Spaces: Writing Horror and the Queer Experience with Blake Hamilton

In this workshop, participants will engage in the process of exploring spaces (buildings, homes, towns, or places of the past) and relate them to the experience of queer existence. What do places say about us, especially those that have been left behind? What fears come up when exploring a location that has become “unknown”? How does horror arise in places when the location is a character, communicator, or symbol? This is an opportunity to expand one's writing, world building, and expression into undefined realms.

Blake Edward Hamilton earned his MFA in Creative Writing from The Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics at Naropa University. His work has appeared in World Literature Today Magazine: Windmill, NPR, Bombay Gin Literary Journal, The Guerrilla Lit Mag., and South Broadway Press, among others. His first full-length collection of poetry, All Through Your Multiple Selves (Spartan / Luchador Press) was released in 2020. His second collection of poetry, Move In Silence (Spartan / Luchador Press), was released in the Spring of 2021. His novel, HIRAETH (Spuyten Duyvil Press), was published in November 2021, and his collection of short fiction, Consummation (Spuyten Duyvil Press), was published in Spring 2023.

Literati Press: Moonlit Massacre Launch Party

“Moonlit Massacre is a powerful, deeply-imagined meditation on violence, grief, race, and home. James Cooper has written a novel as engaging as it is thoughtful.” – Lou Berney, Edgar Award-winning author of November Road.”

In the summer of 1978, six employees of a Sirloin Stockade buffet restaurant found themselves forced into a walk-in freezer during a robbery, then executed, leaving no witnesses. The shocking events and resulting nine-month, nationwide manhunt left a deep scar in the psyche of Oklahoma City residents and served as inspiration for a new novel coming this October by English Professor and OKC City Councilor James Cooper.

Moonlit Massacre, Cooper’s debut novel, draws inspiration from one of Oklahoma’s most notorious crimes as well as other unsolved murders in the same time frame to knit together a story of a community gripped with fear. Rather than focus on the assailants, Cooper explores a young city rocked by tragedy.
Moonlit Massacre presents a diverse Oklahoma landscape overlooked by national news, utilizing elements of true crime, literary horror, and historical fiction to focus on the inner lives of Oklahomans from marginalized backgrounds. To bring this story to life, Cooper dedicated years to researching Oklahoma history and the Stockade murders before completing a Creative Writing MFA at Oklahoma City University. Similar books include Berney’s November Road, Killers of the Flower Moon, Devil in the White City, the works of Stephen Graham Jones, and Jane Harper’s The Dry.

While pursuing an MA in English at Oklahoma State University, Cooper received an award from The Society of Professional Journalists for his column in OSU’s O’Collegian concerning the need for federal hate crimes legislation. Cooper’s essay on the 2013 tornado that devastated Moore, Oklahoma, “An Oklahoma Perspective on Tornado Alley,” appeared in the Huffington Post. The Oklahoma Gazette published Cooper’s 2011 two-part cover story on the history of OKC’s LGBTQ community, “From Closet to Community.” Advocate Magazine named Cooper one of its June 2020 “Champions of Pride.” The New York Times profiled his 2019 campaign.

Cooper won re-election on Valentine’s Day February 2023 to a second term with more votes during a traditional election than any OKC council candidate in, at least, 14 years. Currently, Cooper teaches English and Film Studies as the Artist in Residence at Oklahoma City University, where he’s taught courses on writing and horror, focusing particularly the slasher and occult subgenres.
Moonlit Massacre arrives in bookstores from Literati Press this October 17. Pre-orders available through Instagram and Baker & Taylor

Skull Tree by Kristen Grace - Launch Party

October 3rd, 2024. 7pm

Centuries ago, terrified villagers spread rumors of a monster living in the woods. Once a year, they offer up a young woman to appease the mysterious creature. But what if the villagers are inadvertently creating the very thing they fear the most? In The Skull Tree, poet Kristen Grace creates a new work of mythology and a welcome for anyone made to feel monstrous for becoming what they had to in order to survive.

Kristen Grace is a journalist for 405 Magazine and Art Focus and a graduate from Oklahoma City University’s Red Earth MFA Program. She volunteers as a Creative Writing Leader at Palomar: Oklahoma’s Family Justice Center. She has authored a picture book, The Stepmother Who Dreamed of Feathers, as well as Wings, a collection of feminist fairy tales, through Literati Press. Her first collection of poetry, Love Letters for Women, was self-published.

The Skull Tree is co-published between Literati Press and The Leaves Poetry Press. Literati Press will be staging the reading at their expanded bookshop stage, created as part of the launch of a new creative writing center to advance Literati’s mission to advocate and mentor for the Oklahoma City storytelling community through open mics, readings, music, plays, and workshops focusing on a wide range of literary disciplines.

Showtimes: Thursdays & Sundays at 7:30p / Fridays & Saturdays at 8:00p

Runtime: 2 hours and 30 minutes, with a 15-minute intermission.

Synopsis:

Following the untimely marriage of his uncle, Claudius, to his mother, Gertrude, the Prince of Denmark, Hamlet, is visited by the ghost of his deceased father, whom he learns was murdered by his uncle. Hamlet vows revenge upon Claudius, and soon his sadness turns to manic behavior, threatening to disrupt the fragile peace under the kingdom's new ruler, while war with Norway looms on the horizon.

Hamlet is derailed and distracted along the way to his revenge by his doubt as to the ghost's authenticity, as well as the love he holds for Ophelia, daughter to Polonius, and advisor to the King & Queen. Ophelia is used by her father and the King to attempt to get behind Hamlet's behavior, as Claudius begins to suspect he may know more than he is letting on.

Meanwhile, Rosencrantz & Guildenstern, Hamlet's friends from school, are summoned by the King & Queen in hopes of bringing Hamlet out of his melancholy and uncovering the reason for his madness. Hamlet soon discovers they are not visiting of their own accord and begins to suspect everyone ... eventually leading him to an elaborate plot which he calls, "The Mousetrap," a play within our play designed to catch King Claudius out and expose him as the murderer.

The plot works, King Claudius all but gives himself up to Hamlet, and is overheard confessing his sins; but Hamlet, summoned to and en route to his mother's bedchamber, is unable to take the King's life while he repents, elects instead to "trip" him while on his worst behavior.

In his mother's bedchamber, Hamlet accidentally kills Polonius in a fit of rage and is visited once more by the ghost of his dead father. Hamlet, now a real threat to Claudius and his crown, is shipped off to England, with the intent of his execution in a sealed letter carried by Rosencrantz & Guildenstern.

Ophelia, meanwhile, learns of her father's murder at the hands of her boyfriend, and loses her mind. Her brother, Laertes, returns home from school with murderous intent towards Hamlet, and a broken heart for Ophelia, who eventually drowns herself in a brook, taken down by the weeds and flowers she adored in her life.

Hamlet escapes the execution plot, returns to Denmark, and learns of Ophelia's death, only to be challenged by Laertes to a duel. Unbeknownst to Hamlet, Laertes has joined with Claudius to murder him in the duel and, when the day arrives, mayhem and murder ensue...

Shakespeare's iconic tragedy, is staged outdoors under the stars in our beautiful Shakespeare Gardens amphitheater. You will not want to miss this epic tale of murder most foul.
