Oklahoma City, OK (May 27, 2021) – The Paseo Arts Association (PAA) is pleased to announce Verdean Thompson Johnson as its second artist in residence in the Paseo Arts and Creativity Center (PACC) beginning July 1, 2021.
Thompson Johnson’s work focuses on time and moments, capturing memories, thoughts and perspectives that are often forgotten. His work intends to freeze time and see through a window of a stopped world, creating a space to appreciate the details of that moment using a color palette of primary colors and contrasting black to resonate between light and dark. Verdean intends to create a series of work entitled Flowers comprised of expressive paintings of public figures, role models, friends and mentors. Flowers intends to communicate the attributes and roles of the subject in the artist’s life. Once complete, Thompson Johnson will gift the paintings to the subjects to signify the creation of art as a token of appreciation, versus art made for profit. Thompson Johnson will be creating this series for the duration of his residency at the PACC through June 2022.
Thompson Johnson is actively involved with the arts community in Oklahoma City and worked closely with printmakers and artists at the studio in ARTSPACE at Untitled in 2019 where he received the Outstanding Senior Award. He participated in the Fresh Paint Mural project, displayed a mural in the Still Here showcase at the Myriad Gardens and completed a site-specific mural for the Plaza District in 2020.
Thompson Johnson will be available during the July 2 Paseo First Friday Gallery Walk 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. and visitors are invited to view the July exhibits, tour the facility and meet with Thompson Johnson and the other studio artists.
